Watched recently the "Sin Nombre" movie (and want to see Christian Poveda's last documentary too, "La Vida Loca"), and made some researches about the Mara Salvatrucha 13 and the Mara 18, how they grow up in North America and later on, after being expulsed, in South America : double sentence. First, the US fueled civil wars in South American countries (Iran-Contra) and provoked massive exodus to the South of the States; second, they contributed to destabilize the social and economical structures of the same states by sending back the Mara's gang members.

Was as well wondering if any connections existed between the ancient tatoo traditions (Maoris, pre-american civilization, etc.) and the Maras.
Some tatoos are, from a aesthetical point of view, very interesting (how they follow - or not - the curves of the head, the tension between symetry and asymetry, etc.). Was also interested in how they are shot by the photographs (btw last pic is from Christian Poveda himself), the point of view on the tatoos - and the people themselves - and its meaning.

But I'm still amazed by their "no-future" meaning : their tatoos make them human targets (for the police and for the other gangs) and forbid them any further social rehabilitation (even though I've seen that the tatoos can be erased by laser). So I wanted to know the kind of "Loca" the Maras are grabbed by.

I saw this when it came out and dude, don't see it. I've never seen such a poorly made, unstructured, badly edited documentary in my life. Boring to tears.

Anyways, I was always fascinated in gang and prison culture for some reason. It really is a different world. Cool stuff

yeah I admit there's a strange fascination in it for me as well...I've looked up into the MS, they have a very unique 'mark' with that body art...their utter brutality isn't what I would condone. As far as gangs go it's one of more peculiar interest to me though...

that one picture above (fourth from bottom) with the bald dude wearing the neck charm staring straight into the camera is my favorite portrait of the bunch. a very revealing depiction of evil, no pretense or disguise of anything else. those eyes can only belong to a cold blooded killer

i missed that one completely. i just figured it was a guy from Italy who didn't have a good grasp of English, but was passionate and maybe liked L'Uomo Vogue for inspiration, college student between ages of 19-22, possibly stuck in the Hedi Slimane DH/MSN forum era time warp.

I'm sure nobody wants to seriously consider this possibility, but, hey : maybe Zboss is passionate and perfectly sincere in his interest for fashion.

Just think about how much he must love this forum, to come back every time as he does. This is quite admirable.

Whatever his intentions may be, Zboss is undisputedly one of the most provocative and enigmatic figures of the Post-Zeitgeist era of fashion.

I just got the dvd of the Quay brothers' short animation films. I expect a lot of inspiration to come from this, I really like the decayed visual quality of the objects they use and create

watching their interview made me realise I had tea with them once in London while I was interning at a music label, many years ago. Of course, I had no idea who they were at the time. I could kick myself retrospectively for being so shy and not made more of the opportunity
