not to throw a spanner in the works of the discussion, but what i was suggesting was kind of the opposite - in italy, no matter how nice something is, there is usually someone who's ready to like add something a bit trashy to the equation. like some uggs at lazzari, or something with rhinestones to an outfit, some ring-dancing to the alternative nightclub's dancefloor or some dancing girls in bikinis to the news broadcasts. high and low in a heady mix... (nb. this is just my personal and highly generalized observation obviously)
