thanks for a very interesting thread.

maybe one way to think about it is: what could justify "crazy" prices?

to me, there are a range of answers.

    1) fabrics and materials.
    2) cut and fit.
    3) an original, novel idea you value.
    5) finishing and details.
    5) service (a la the boutiques we all know and love).
    6) currency/tax effects.

just a small stab, not an exhaustive list. what's interesting to me is that, for example, that balmain scores maybe 1 or 2/6. so it's hard for me to justify. but many others that are sz favs score much higher.

    fwiw.

/\ Don't forget what endorphinz is harping on - supply/demand. That is a huge factor. And, of course, making up for the discounted/unsold stuff (but that is not designer's problem, but a retailer's problem)

Designers can very much be hurt by discounted/unsold clothes by receiving charge backs every time their merchandise is marked down by stores like Barneys.

          ^
this is exactly why i left the bus.

everything in life depends on leverage. if a label is hot, they can set their own terms....retailers NEED THEM. once the "hotness" waivers, it's a whole new ball game for the brand. it's forced to make concessions that it never needed to do previously.

anyway you try to slice it, is all about supply/demand

and, as a side note, as the number of retailers decreases, their power over manufacturers/designers/labels increases.

^ I would like to add that a decrease in independant retailers may also be due to manufacturers cutting through the distribution channel to go direct to customers. Fast fashion companies in particular are doing this, like the MTM suit companies that was posted awhile ago. We even see raw material manufacturers become labels of their own materials, which is hard to beat. Businesses all over are cutting middlemen because they're becoming more competant in-house. Back in the day, a designer probably only knew how to make beautiful clothes. But now they know how to better sell it.

This thread certainly deserves a bump.

having a moral crisis ordering a CCP jacket. Boots i had no problem with as i wear them a lot and i guess it would be the same with the jacket but buying a new house, shit, when I think of what I could buy with 5k. a dining room set, a few semesters of books for my kids, etc.

It all depends on the context, really.
