cordovan is the horse buttocks and neck, not related with tanning. The parts Carol Christian uses can be found on every horse, he is using the left surface that usually noone does tho as it is considered too ugly. Also why use the reverse when the upper is what catches your eyes (usually)

Arto is right. Do a search on cordovan leather and you will see cheap jackets, full couches etc made of "cordovan" which is obviously not completely correct. Shell cordovan plates (and I have a few of these in my studio) are only enough to make a shoe each. No jackets can be made of shell cordovan, no bags etc. So the term is being used fast and loose all around.

There is a general shortage of true shell cordovan in the world right now since the butt plates are a byproduct of the horse meat market which is decreasing in demand.

If youve ever handled the shell plates you will immediately understand they really can't be used for anything other than footwear and leather goods. It does not lend well to other uses really well.

What everyone said is correct; Shell Cordovan != Cordovan. I have a watch strap made of Horween Shell, it has a very distinctive almost rubber like feel.

Cordovan is also a color name. I think that's what has lead to the confusion. Cordovan leather is burgundy/brown. Pretty sure the name came from the natural color of shell (or something to do with Shell Cordovan, where it's from, I can't remember), but has been in use for much longer than anyone on this forum has been alive. I'm sure there's abuse of terminology out there, but there's also overloading of the term.

As mentioned, they fit seriously small...I'm a pretty true 46 and when I attempted to this this size on, I literally could not get it on.
i traded my LUC jeans + Julius belt + Neil Barrett jeans for a blamain biker jeans
