i imagine it must be especially hard going out like that in Asia...well, I actually think mainland China is more open minded towards expressing yourself through dress. Here in Hong Kong it's so homogenous, when I go out literally everyone is wearing a t-shirt and jeans. Wearing something like what you wore, or even what I wore (which i consider a pretty basic, no frills outfit) stands out like a sore thumb. I once actually got criticized for wearing leather shoes in a casual setting. This girl said, "why are you wearing leather shoes? you should be wearing sneakers, it is hard for you to make friends wearing leather shoes" or something to that effect. Makes me miss places such as NY, Paris, Tokyo etc. where dressing up is the norm. </p>
In a way, I am disappointed in people's aesthetic value here in Hong Kong, it is different labels but no different mentality than the Abercrombie herd mentality I tend to see on midwest college campuses in the US.
