she was way cool, she held a 2 hour long onstage discussion in the afternoon with about 50 participants, introducing herself as the object formerly known as Nan Goldin -claiming she stopped shooting, cus there were no one left to shoot, as all her friends were dead....
she never looks at her own work anymore and refused to be in the room while they showed a large portion of her work...
sidenote - first thing she said to me afterwards at the private party was - I saw you two sitting there in the front, looking like friends used to look in the 80s, long haired and rugged, thinking - they probably fucking hate my work...."
only to be pleasently surpriced when I told her Ive been admiring her work since I started photographing 15 years ago...

the photo of the old guy does not look 'almost exactly like' jeff wall's photo. my photo has an old guy walking. wall's photo has a young guy sitting down with a carton of milk exploding out of his hand. almost exact? no. not even close.
then your analogy that follows is bordering on the ridiculous, which i assume you just intend as a dismissive. it's not even a clear analogy, nor is it fitting. i won't engage.
originality is an ideal, period.
have you seen jeff wall's work in person? i really didn't like it until i saw a retrospective of his work in chicago a few years ago. grudgingly, it made sense to me after that.
Originally posted by laughed View Postyeah, you're right. the originality thing. and it is a ideally a real thing. see what i did there. anyway, it's more than that, but in this case your photos look almost exactly like a photo that is very, very well-known and i guess liked. not by me, but some people do. Let's see...What if you said you were showing your new movie poster for the new movie you made - called "Pulp Story" and the movie poster was the exact same poster as "Pulp Fiction" only the word fiction was replaced with story and Uma was replaced with any other actress? And someone said "Hey! That looks like the Pulp Fiction poster!" and you said "Well, the film itself, to those who have seen it say it is a lot like Pulp Fiction...but we Improvised!" but don't mind me, I think Jeff Wall is shit so it doesn't matter what I say.

thanks. i really liked the second (vertical) shot but somehow as i was handling the film to print today i got an irreversible scratch on the upper right hand corner of the picture that shows up in every print. Tried the nose grease method and there is somewhat of a damage control done but it's still bothering me. Guess I fucked up on this one...
i like your use of the blur for this color shot more than in the black and whites, the feeling of being disoriented or perhaps on drugs is more visceral in this particular example, like an internal jolt.
