this was uneven yet oddly managed to successfully pull off all the things it was trying to be in its own charming way. Out of the Park Chan Wook films I've seen this was easily the most viscerally graphic - probably the first time I ever cringed at something in the movie theater. Don't know how this got away with just a "12" censorship rating in France while all his previous efforts were handed the "16"...despite the simple as possible storyline, due to what was being shown on screen I found this more taxing to watch than the Revenge series with their more intricate plotting.

on the same note I am really disappointed that the American Old Boy isn't done by Scorsese/Keitel. I can't think of any other director/actor pairing Stateside that could possibly do the material justice.

/\ I must say, the esoteric nature of your cultural choices never ceases to amaze me.

I haven't seen it yet although I did see the Decalogue. So great

rewatching David Lean's Dr Jivago. So kitsh but so great, I wish I could see it in a theatre purely for the scenery. Also I wish I could go back to Russia soon, but I still have a few more months to wait

oh yes, it's great. It's one of those old films that may seem mediocre, but is genius for it's time. when watching it, I felt that not much has changed since then. not things that now matter, in everyday lives, anyway.

it is in the book "A supposedly fun thing i'll never do again"

probably the single best piece of film literature i have ever read, this particular essay was. especially in the latter section when he moves onto Lynch's greater body of work, focusing discussion heavily on Blue Velvet.
