Cutaways, handle and blade design were done to allow not only for a "classic" knife grip but also allow for correct hand and finger placements for the current techniques of handling scalpels (pencil grip and pinch grip).

The Design and Construction Process



Starts from a concept and sketch.



Then the general shape is measured, drawn and cut from the raw steel.



Hand finishing, grinding and the holes are drilled.



Serenity X Collateral stamps are hammered into the blade.



Solid steel bolsters are cut and pinned in place. The whole piece is then heat treated to increase hardness.



Paired mammoth ivory panels chosen and laid out for each handle.



Handle pins are placed (including center mosaic pin) and the excess ivory ground away to match the basic handle shape. Bolsters have also been ground to round their shape out.



First pass to start shaping the ergonomics of the handle and the transition between the ivory and the bolster.



Second grind. The curves and shapes really start to take place and transitions are smoothed out.
