lacma and the getty acquire the mapplethorpe collection with the help of david geffen.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the J. Paul Getty Trust announced that they had acquired a huge collection of the prints, negatives and letters of Robert Mapplethorpe, further strengthening the California’s position as a major center for 20th century photography.

not a huge fan of his work, with the exception of his flowers. too 80's and too much soft focus. nice they found a home- the storage facilities at getty are world class. both museums are planning to have shows in the next 3 years..

how will this increase attendance? these institutions have no money and they want to do this? and what a terrible way to look at art. there's no intimacy. just download everything..

How is this NOT amazing? I don't have the time or money to make world trips to museums. This allows me to view pieces in extreme definition (the zoom astounds me) and promotes art in general (think about how many people saw that Art announcement). "What a terrible way to look at art". What other is there besides buying a book or going to the actual gallery. Buying a book is a fine way to go about it, but having an online cataloge of art pieces, in the highest quality and lighting (ever notice how varied the lighting is when you google a piece?), is a handy tool you can't bash.

Don't get me wrong, this is no substitue. I've been to most major art museums on the Eastern coast of the US, but west coast, Asian, or European trips are expensive and time consuming.

I saw a few huma bhaba pieces at Peter Blum Gallery and later at MoMa earlier this year. I loved all the pieces and was wondering what other people here think of the artist and her work.
