Currently I read Michel Tournier - Le bonheur en Allemagne.
a french man - got through both world wars, studied germanism in germany right after 1950 - and his view to Germany.

I plan to do Bellow next in my American Contemporary phase. What work would you recommend to start with?

I just finished Roth's Zuckerman cycle and it was incredible, a deeply physical experience. The prose is very direct and clear so the emotional impact really sneaks up on you.

Feel myself coming into another Russian phase... Just starting on Notes from the Underground.

I really need to start learning Russian properly, I've got the Nicholas J Brown russian course book, but haven't knuckled down. Someone start what language are you learning today???

I've been in a russian phase for years

I'm currently reading a collection of Mandelstam's poems (from Tristia onwards) as well as The Red Cavalry by Isaac Babel

                Both are stunning reads

That's a really good beginner Russian book -- been trying to find equivalents for other languages.

So I've heard. I'm going to pick up a few notebooks today and start having a proper crack. Maybe then I'll understand half the off-tangent discussions here ahahah

I finished Cormac McCarthy's The Road earlier this week, and I admittedly liked it much better than Blood Meridian. Still had those overwrought McCarthyisms that grate on heavily on my soul, but it was still an engaging read. Sometimes, he's as subtle as the craters on the moon.
