Got into the screening of Ponyo introduced by Miyazaki himself. I was the last person in (there were like 400+ behind me) so pretty exciting since I ended up getting the reserved seat of some VIP who bailed so I was front and dead center. Made my year.

just saw public enemies...some pretty good shootouts in there, probably the best film i've seen in theaters this summer, then again i haven't been to the theater a whole lot this summer.

Patrick de Ranter's cinematography is brilliant.

                yeah i can respect that

honestly it was a bit of a surprise, and in some ways refreshing (at least on a first viewing) that the movie was just so damn detached, with that neither here nor there tone that never bothers to settle. From the camera work to some details such as the characters' responses and use/non-use of music, it is a cohesive and consistent vision on a certain level and never has a moment that panders otherwise, which I liked. I found it an awfully uncommercial film for the summer, felt like something that'd get released more around Thanksgiving time...but i kind of like that it was presented in such a matter of fact manner. And hey, Michael Mann never disappoints in a film that involves gunplay.

finally saw The Hangover...really surprised at how this became the smash hit of summer 2009. I am usually a big fan of this type of comedy, and found the movie to be quite well scripted, acted and directed...but it just wasn't funny. I dunno...two pretty strange counter-intuitive moviegoing experiences back to back evenings. Huh.

I just finished watching La possibilité d'une île .. And eventhough i must say i'm usually a big fan of Houellebecq and i've read almost all of his books, this was, to put it in Faustian terms, just beyond wackarnolds.
It had a feeling he tried to be very avant-garde and make it a tad surrealistic/absurd, in which he most definately succeeds when its comes to his book, but in the movie it was just straight up laughable and felt very arty-farty.

My reaction was similar. It was solid but quite derivative of Very Bad Things. (But with better performances/pacing)

Saw A World Without Thieves, thought it was decent but somewhat cheesy. (Especially the acrobatic/slow-mo) Pacing was painful at times but I felt oddly uplifted/content when I reflected on it afterwards.

Finally watched 3:10 to Yuma and LOVED it. (Yeah I know) Never watched the original, and generally hate the cast and type of characters, but I thought it very focused despite the awful Christian Bale sulky sad rancher vibe. Very classically shot actioner, could have been shot in the 60-70s by camera technique. (No post Bourne hypercutting)

saw alexei german jr.'s paper soldier last night on the big screen.
wow. so far, film of the year.

first 10 mins of the film.
one of my favourite scenes close to the end.

I need to do this soon, maybe tomorrow. I believe it's been well over a decade since I last saw it.
