Sure you can. A milestone, by broader definition, is simply something you want to achieve that's important to you. You don't have to know the date in advance. The day your goal is met becomes your milestone.

If you don't "broad the definition", what you describe here is not a milestone, but a goal, as others stated.

I can't understand neither how a milestone can be set, since a step can be recognized as a milestone only retrospectively, at the soonest "once your goal is met", but not before. And I'd say that you often need much more time before knowing if the step was indeed a milestone, or not.

But the main problem I have, and I agree with endorphinz, is the definition of the milestone as a successfully achieved goal. A milestone - i.e. an important step in life - can be a success or a failure. Or it would mean that life should be only a success story - the most boring of all stories imo.

^ I think what you mean is that a successfully achieved goal is a milestone, as is an unsuccessful one, provided the effect, bad or good, creates a positive (or negative, depending on whether you see your life as a raised topography or a lowered one, though I assume we're still speaking relatively) impression on your life.

But I don't think we're talking about "personal" milestones.. Just milestones occurring during the course of a lifetime. Remarkable events, the most noticeable points on the flowchart of a lifetime, not achievements, or the culmination and successful completion of a set number of tasks.

Plus, that definition isn't in a cultural context, but a managerial one.
