Alright it is high time to write about MOSCOW.

Currently I live there, and it offers a safe relief from Africa's savannahs and nearly same lever of savagery whenever needed. I live about 30 km from center, south west in calm quiet county get away, behind a nice guarded wall. Naturally it takes me a while to get to the city, but all in all its fairly easy as all of my offices are located along the way to Center (crafty life management). So to be throughout here is the break in:

Weather: Weather is horribly predictable. You get about 6 sunny days a month. If you expect weather change, expect the worse. Generally best to visit during autumn - its relatively cool and sometimes a bit rainy, but quite beautiful in auburn colours... February is worst month to visit, you are garanteed extreme cold and extremly dirty streets. Summer is very hot 30C+ and its intolerable in a huge city. So weather wise Moscow is particulary not so nice. Spring can be rather cold and whats worse VERY dirty as all the snow melts. May is a VERY nice month though.

Architecture: Russian architects were always world famous. Thus the best buildings were traditionally built by Italian architects. All in all, its diverse and wierd. But there are very nice parts around Kremlin.

People: Russians are grim, moody and passionate people with heavy inner angst seeping through their determined eyes. This is true for men. Women tend to be rather pretty. All in all there are plenty of english speaking people, so it should be easy for you to find someone to communicate with. Do not venture too far from Center unless your going to Barviha or to visit county residences of your friends (be they dachas or mansions on Rublevka) - unless you seek adventures. Remember in Russia trouble looks for you. If you venture too far from center at night all decked in nice Guidi and Rick Owens, there is a good chance to get in a nice fist fight with roaming alcoholics taking their white bears for a walk (kidding about white bears).

Law Enforcement: It is still a disputed question if they are actually protecting someone and not a hazard. Technicly if they aproach you they probably do not speak english, and will try to get a bribe from you for violating one of various russian laws (imaginary or real). What my japanese partner does usually - he goes samurai blank on them till they go away. If they don't he calls his driver.

Transportation: Russian metro is epic. In terms of look and amount of people there. Haven't been there for a long time, but my assistants reassure me daily that it stayed the same. It can be a quick and cheap means of transportation. (Not sure on the prince but its def. <1$). On other hand you can just walk out on a road and extend hand. Gypsy cabs are cheap and reliable, do not put your wasted friends in them however. Finally taxis are same as everywhere else in the world I can recomend a few numbers where you get a nice mercedes with a english speaking driver.

Fun: Casinos are about to close up as Mr. Putin believes that gambling is bad. There are PLENTY of nightclubs and they can be extremly fun. For me they are angst incarnate as they fall into three kinds:
    - Elitny Russian Club: currently Soho Rooms, The Most, Forbes and whatever crazy name that gives off wealth and coolness. What you can expect there is TON of very attractive women seeking mostly rich sponsors or dolce vita. Its very boring places unless your drunk or with lots of friends.
    - More Bohemian clubs: like Simachev or Solyanka, filled mostly with more intellectual and fashionable crowd. You can meet people in Rick Owens or Julius there sometimes. Also can be very boring unless drunk, but the hot women there are mostly available and not object to monetary negotiation.
    - Other places: Can be very dangerous and not so nice.

    Restaraunts to visit:
    - Pushkin: Russian cousine, if it exists. (this priceless advice will be given by anyone)

    Part II:

    More restaraunts:

MariVanna - now this one is nearly impossible to get into unless you have a reservation. It reminds of a intellectual dacha kitchen in soviet russia in interior and menu.

Luch - very busy bar/restaraunt at night. You can encounter anyone from Presidential administration to creative directors there. Lots of pretty women included. Better get reservation for night. For Friday-Saturday a few nights in advance. Highly recomended place.

Part III: Moscow important to know symbology:

Cars with headlights: They denote owners of life in here. Don't mess with guys who drive around in black BMW 7th, S-Class mercs and Audi A8s with blue headlights and carplate numbers like AMP, OOO, CCC - they tend to have world spanning connections of outmost seriousness.

If you see a relatively modest car like black ford focus with headlights and number like EKX following you - you must be doing something VERY wrong.

(Will continue to expand this later... Stupid meeting)

Mona, I googlestreet'd Brooklyn. Nice park you have there. I'm not sure which direction I started to go, but after a couple of turns it started to look quite rough and worn out :). Which part is a nice one?

      SHYE_POSER,
It is a city that i love to hate!
true. I think it's like that because it really is a very nice city, but it's government seems to be dedicated to fucking it up. That's why I love it, but at the same time feel sorry for it, because it's losing it's appeal at quite a pace.

      Area known as Alexandra Palace.
For me i wouldnt have wanted to live anywhere else.
Really? I heard Crouch End's quite nice, but I can't imagine that anything past Seven Sisters/Wood Green can be a nice place to live.

Then if you head south of the hill,u have woodgreen and finsbury park.
Which are high in crime and a rather fucked up!But bustling with life.
Welcome to my neighborhood ;). Bustling, yeah, but not exactly with the kind of life I'd like to be part of.

But it is these contrasts that i love so much.
I think people that love contrasts love them while being on the good side of one.

ahlefeldt, interesting. How about English? Do many people speak it? Could you survive there without strong knowledge of Danish?

      Alesha,
Russians are grim, moody and passionate people with heavy inner angst seeping through their determined eyes.
      haha, I love that.

If you venture too far from center at night all decked in nice Guidi and Rick Owens, there is a good chance to get in a nice fist fight with roaming alcoholics
Still? I heard that 'gopniki' is a thing of the past from some friends who live there.

Eat me, what is it you think the "government" is doing to fuck up london and cause its appeal to drop apace? doesn't it have a devolved form of local administration, headed by Boris?

Crouch End is rather nice, not to dissimilar from HighGate or Muswell Hill.
To be fair Finsbury Park is a lot better nowadays. It has a lot of young creative types moving in to the area, and a lot re generation going on within the area.
The same could be said for the East End.It was an absolute shit hole. Today it seems it is one of the most creative areas of London.
I just like contrasts..full stop. Regardless of what side you live.
Im smack bang in the middle, had a lot of part time jobs in woodgreen growing up.And i have a lot of old friends in the area.(granted a lot of them are very naughty).
I used to have a flat in Archway, that to is not considered a particularly "safe"area.
But ive never come across any issues. Not there or anywhere while i was growing up and even now.
I think it is because if you recognize the danger its easily avoided.
Growing up within in these areas has taught me to be extremely aware and constantly alert.

What, the sarcasm about russian architects or the fact that majority of russian historical buildings were built by foreigners?

Still? I heard that 'gopniki' is a thing of the past from some friends who live there.
Actually they are going through revival :) Economic crisis and low oil prices created simulacrum gopniki. Though I wasn't meaning those fellows - there are plenty of dangerous elements beside them from militia to guests from southern countries.

I agree about what Ahlefeldt said regarding Copenhagen. I'll also add that the city has the highest number of Michelin-starred restaurant in the world compared to its population along Noma, which is regarded one of the best restaurants in the world. If I recall correctly it is ranked as #3 on Restaurant Magazine's year 2009 list. Copenhagen hosts a lot of cultural events such as the International Jazz Festival, "Kulturnatten" (the night of culture) where museums, restaurants etc. during the night and public transportation is free, we have Copenhagen Distortion (which is actually going on now) with various party events on the streets, in clubs a bit like a small Loveparade (but more intimate with several smaller, competing parties during 4 days) and a lot of other city-wide events. I’ll also add to Ahlefeldts point that Copenhagen is clean, the weather is tolerable, the girls are absolutely beautiful and there is a lot of green space scattered around the city. Shopping is okay compared to its small size, but as Ahlefeldt said it can’t compete with larger cities.
The reason why most young Copenhageners (including me) want to leave is probably the fact that the city is quite small. With the population of greater Copenhagen only being about 1 million you run out of new interesting and inspiring people and places pretty quickly. The more creative, fashion forward crowd is very small and it's the same people going to the same places and it gets tiring pretty quickly. If you're ready to settle down for a quieter life Copenhagen is great though. But I'm young and need adventure and stimulation and inspiration, so I'm moving to Stockholm in a few months and probably NY or London from there. :-)

Well seeing as no one from Canada has posted...lived in Vancouver, BC most of my life prior to moving to Toronto recently for design school. Vancouver is as beautiful as people say it is as you are surrounded by mountains and the ocean. It is very scenic and I miss being able to get to the beaches or the trails within 30min from the outskirts of downtown Vancouver. If you are into the outdoors, whether it be skiing, mountain biking, kayaking etc., it is readily accessible here.

There are lots of little islands that you can get away to and one of my favorite moments is sitting out on a rocky outcrop watching the sun go down as the ferry went by. Massive amounts of construction going on in preparation for 2010 Olympics.

I describe Vancouver as a the 'kid who is still trying to find his/her identity'. It has great food...as good as any of the top restaurants that I've visited in NYC or SF and much cheaper. But the nightlife sucks...cultural activities can be good at times. Not a lot of museums/galleries if you are into that type of thing...I miss NY for just being able to wander into any number of places and find a great exhibition. Weather can be depressing at times...yes it does rain but the weather has been a little strange there lately...global warming?

Not sure where my life journey will take me next...in terms of places that I've spent a lot of time in...love to live in Berlin, Paris (my french sucks though), maybe NY (it would likely be Brooklyn).

I have heard Coopenhagen is a beautiful place as well.

shit, haven't been to moscow in.. at least 15 years and i can't say i've been all that tempted to revisit the place.
Actually if you haven't been to Moscow for so long, definately visit. It changed completely since than.

Technicly during day you can be a hardcore neformal and not get your ass kicked unless you meet some rare recidivist who is having his 3 day out of jail period. They don't wind up in Moscow usually. Back in a day it was impossible :)

For me Moscow is divided in two periods. When I was a child, and did all those crazy adventurous things, in USSR collapse era. The uncertain change period that followed. Than I left Russia and had rather insane trip around the world. And modern post 2000's Russia when I returned. The later was a golden age very much, of constant rise for everyone. The current starting decline period, is very painful.

I am glad that people apriciate my rambling about Russia, to be honest, every time I leave Russia for longer than 3-4 month, I get nostalgia. Currently my job is closely associated with understanding russians and their behavior, thus I aproach everything as a test subject.

In regards to gopniki I think Faust and Merz might find this new:

that video is so great. It actually makes me want to go back to Moscow, I haven't been in over 6 years.
However, I'm not sure what the song is about, other than his name, since I don't know russian slang at all (except for blyad, obv: most important word ever)

Its very... sort of strange slang. Basicly this video brings forward heartbreaking revelation of average street gopnik, who tries to understand the dichotomy of difficult existance in street jungle, where you never know if you are the predator or recieve the different end of the stick. All this is brought to deliberately outrageous level of artistic expression, fully utilising talents of this young artist.
