    Re: Carol Christian Poell

I visited a leather factory but you don't really understand what is going on, some processes are too long so you just see vats and machinery and don't understand what is really going on. The info I'm relaying is from what I know and validated by a book about shoemaking.

some more pics and explaination on tanning horsehide here..

      http://www.buzzricksons.jp/detail.html

Leather tanning is the process whereby raw?Hides?or skins are converted
into?Leather?through a chemical reaction between the tannins and the
raw hides. There exist two common methods of tanning, respectively
referred to as ?Chrome? and ?Vegetable?tanning. Chrome tanning is the
most common method today, which is based on the reaction between the
hide and chromium sulfate. Chrome-tanned leather has a tendency to be
softer and more pliable to the touch, stable in water, and less time
consumptive than vegetable tanning. Vegetable tanning, on the other
hand, is the oldest of any tanning method, and results from a reaction
between the collagen fibers in the hides and tannins extracted from
specific tree bark. Leather tanned in this vegetable process is very
strong and typically used for heavy-duty applications and the soles of
shoes. After our continuous studies and analyses, we learned that
?vegetable tanning?was the method utilized to generate most of the
leather employed in the production of vintage A-2's. The total
vegetable-tanning process requires over three months to yield a
finished hide, with the ultimate result being a very distinctive
leather surface once the completed garment is worn for a long period of
      time.

Ok so I can't find the actual episode but if anyone happens to come across let me know. The process was filmed at the Horween factory in Chicago.

Thanks for the breakdown Fuuma. I'd actually like to know more about chrome-salt tanning. Would you mind sharing your knowledge of it?

Also, the object tanning of shoes is not what I was siting in my example of the "illusory" wrinkles, but a jacket (a heavy one at that). It is the outerwear he is producing that is subject to the post-fabrication tanning that I find exciting. Just wanted to clear that up.

            Cheers!

It was already posted in the "good finds" thread. Take the time to know the forum before you spam. This thread/section is usually used to discuss various brands not buy/sell them.

So what did you think of Poell's foray into the magical world of perforations?

Judging by the fit pics from 2 pages back, the perf gloves look good. The only perforated item I like at the moment is the white d.buckle belt

that belt is awesome - if i was a baller, i'd get it. not crazy about perforated anything else. perforated gloves especially defy practicality. i don't think it looks that goo either.

I agree in general but Diego is right; that belt looks good. Did he make it in black?

I think the black version is not perforated (probably from last year). I could be wrong though. I was at A today, too...

I'm not sure if he did the double buckle in black but he did single buckle perforated in black and I don't like it, white perforated leather looks better, in black the detail is lost I think.

Double buckle was done in black non-perf and grey perf at least.
