Can't say I'm a fan of Garrel's recent works but his early output, created under the auspices of the counter-Cahier collective, Zanzibar films, are hard not to delight in. This one here is more than a match for anything historically resembling cinematic brilliance.

This movie is very interesting, post may 68 reflection and incestuous Jesus.

I'm watching other worlds after having seen is suggested in this thread, pretty interesting so far.

managed to catch this at the Thai Takes 3 film festival in NY in 2007 - now having the damnedest time trying to track down a region free/region 1 DVD (if that even exists). it's only slightly like "last life..." but i loved it, am a sucker for Asano-kun (and the lead actress is from "Oldboy").

PIANO TUNER a while back and it's a film you HAVE to watch in a theatre.

Maybe this is where my experience fell short (watched it on a laptop). Visually stunning even then but I was complete detached from it during and afterwards (in a bad way)....

The sex scene with the dirty talking was golden IMHO, all this play on racial dynamics being inverted.

Red cliff II wasn't very enjoyable imho and I liked the first one.

I saw the first one in Tokyo while being half asleep and didn't really understand what was going on that well. I liked the second half, but it wasn't omgamazing. I wonder if it being recut into a single 2.5 hour film for the western release will potentially improve it.

Rather obvious mention (might have earlier) but got around to seeing Coraline recently - really great visually and otherwise. I believe in Neil Gaiman.

I don't know, as far as argento goes it's not that crazy. I mean, it's no inferno or anything. really great movie though, and typically stellar soundtrack work

I'll give you that the insanity of the film is seriously ramped up by the real world setting and relatively straight forward direction.

the old japanese laserdisc of phenomena had this incredible commentary track moment where argento is reminiscing about working with a young jennifer connelly, rambling on and on in broken english about how much potential she had and how great it is that she became a star, and then just goes (in a heavy italian accent):

"huge breasts."

followed by like a solid minute of silence.

i got so excited the first time i watched this. one of my favorites.

speaking of teenage french girls,

re-watched catherine breillat's une vraie jeune fille the other night. it held up incredibly well from my first viewing a couple of years ago. georges bataille filtered through a feminist brain and a grainy 70's color palette.

Watch "my mother" by Honoré, it's an adaptation of the Bataille novel.

haven't seen picnic at hanging rock, but this comparison alone is enough to make seeking it out a priority. just love spirit of the beehive.

speaking of which, has anyone seen any of erice's other films?

A friend of mine translated and subtitled Erice's El Sur for his thesis. I have a copy, though the quality is not the same as the criterion treatment for Spirit. :)
If you haven't seen it, let me know, and Ill send you a copy. It is really fantastic.
I just saw recent Palm D'or winner The Class. It is a very solid film and the way the director got the performances is phenomenal. It truly plays like a doc. Recommended!
