It was a very well written article.

As hoping as I am that a real discussion will sprout from this, I fear many people, such as some of the commenters, use logic like someone in one of my classes did: on domestic manufacturing vs outsourcing, (along the lines of) "American Apparel is too expensive"

well, i would be tempted to agree that american apparel is too expensive for its target market and is run poorly, considered it was bankrupt two (?) years ago.

the global economy is a bit of a mess for reasons that go above and beyond the current downturn and before either that is fixed or the way that clothing is produced is fundamentally changed then i don't see an end to the trend we're following towards cheaper, disposable clothing, expensive luxury clothing, and basically nothing in between.

^They never went through bankruptcy, Crystal Financial loaned them $80mil and now they're reporting growth again.

On another note, to see Keersmaeker at an H&M event takes the cake for me. What the hell.
My first thought was, this has Keersmaeker's Violin Phase written all over it,
then I saw your comment and my heart sunk a bit.

Are you afraid of women, Doctor?
            Of course.

because unlike you who knows about fashion design in an historical context and can see this for what it is; pure garbage. The people who will buy this are mindless herds who are a destructive force to the industry as a whole, and to creating intelligent high quality garments specifically.

Martin Margiela himself cannot like this at all, no matter how much the sophists spins it.............just the thought of this collab and what it represents make me want to throw up........
“You know,” he says, with a resilient smile, “it is a hard world for poets.”

Intrigued by all the emotional responses from people who shouldn't particularly care, mm definitely doesn't care at this point. The idealism is futile..

Welcome it the same way you might welcome watching a porn movie. Could.. don't have to (one hopes)..cheap, shameful, quick and who gives a f*** the kids love it...

Now searching on ebay for old season Margiela will never be the same. The flooding has started.

eBay tip: you can use the - sign to exclude things from search results. So searching for "margiela -h&m" will give you results without h&m in the title.

Yeah, I know about the "-" for exclusions, but currently there are many sellers who aren't even bothering to list the "H&M x" part in the title which is a bit frustrating.

And yes, I'm glad they didn't do tabi's too.

I generally always browse ebay for old MMM and I shit you not, the first page of results had 1 mainline MMM item, 2 items which weren't MMM at all and the rest was the colab.

                            What a load of shit.

Two side of the argument (from the Guardian today)

                              (a) "I've never heard of him [Margiela] but I just always buy things from the H&M designer ranges," said Lisa Hyatt, from Notting Hill, who had bought £900 worth of womenswear, including a coat made from a duvet.

                              (b) "But for hardcore fans, who ordinarily cannot afford the expensive catwalk creations, this is their chance to own a slice of their chosen designer: Eleonora Sacco, 27, who had queued since 5am, has admired the brand over the past decade. She bought a black dress, a metallic clutch and bracelet, all for around £130"

Fair enough for Eleonora I say.

Whether it was business or a philosophical decision to my mind it makes little difference.

If MMM as a brand is undermined as a result then who cares. This doesn't undermine what came before. In every sense but monetarily(probably) old MMM pieces are not instrinically worth less as a result of this collaboration.

If there's something beautiful in the design or the idea behind MMM's work then perhaps exposing others to it might not be a bad thing even if they don't get the message as the designer might have originally intended it.

Someone with a younger vision will replace the space MMM occupied (some years ago in my view). And one day too they can choose to sellout or collaborate with a large clothing manufacturer/retailer depending on your point of view.
