    Re: Men's Footwear

I personally don't think they are worth the money. I've seen them up close and the construction and materials used don't warrent the price tag IMO. Cloak has upped the pricepoints to be in line with other high end labels but they are still glued/fused boots and the soles still have something to be desired for. Here in Japan, many niche labels are doing similar interpretations at lower price points approximately, some good ones for $300. Also, I know last spring's boots had some wierd sizing issues. This is all based on last spring collection's boots however. Perhaps this fall's collection has gotten better?

Huge 2nd. Although they are made by
a reputable company, Buttero, they don't decide on the materials.
Definitely not worth the money and definite sizing issues. Case,
there was a boatload of them left at the Barneys WAREHOUSE sale, so
that should tell you something. I think you should go look at
them, try them on, see if you like them as much in person. Not
sure Barneys bought them, given the last season's fiasco, but the
boutique should have them. Maybe Opening Ceremony, too.

ok, a few quick questions regarding cdiem and guidi boots.

how's the fit for both (do they run small, large, or true)? and which, overall, do you prefer?

        (if it matters, i'm generally a 43.5-44)

        i'm
considering getting a pair of one or the other and, as i'm nowhere near
anyplace that has a a pair i can try on, i figured i'd ask those that
        own them already.

any and all help is greatly appreciated.

        In
my experience both run true to size. HOWEVER, I would definitely
ask around more, and get the measurements if possible.

            guidi boots run true
cdiem boots run 1-2 sizes large. i'm a 42 and i can wear 40-42 depending on the boot/shoe.

                OK, a shoe repair question...

Has anyone ever managed to have moulded rubber soles repaired successfully? I have a pair of Y's shoes with leather uppers and a converse/vans style black rubber sole that overlaps the leather upper. The sole on one shoe has split (crocodile mouth style!). I love these shoes and would do anything to keep them on the road. I took them to London's best known quality cobbler (on White Lion Street in Mayfair) and he said he couldn't do anything with them: they couldn't be resoled and if he glued them he was pretty sure they would split again straight away.

                Any ideas?

This is the sole reason I never buy expensive shoes that have been fused/glued/have rubber roles. Take them to a Y's/Yohji Y. store.

are the zippers not atrocious on the boot? they certainly were on the hoodies.

I agree the Cloak boots aren't worth the price. I'll probably make a trip to NYC when sales start so if they are left I might get them. Those Raf boots look awesome, but yea, I would have a hard time pulling them off. I'm really dying for some boots, right now I only have one pair, black ankle boots from Miu Miu. I can't decide between something cheap (reasonable at least) that I can sludge through winter in, or something really nice that I'll cherish. I'm thinking the next thing I should get is some sort of brown ankle boot. I have my eyes on a pair of brown suede boots on yoox but I'm waiting for them to get marked down. I'm not sure if suede is too delicate. The suede parts of my sneakers quickly became scuffed and blackened. Any thoughts on were I should be looking?

There are special treatmens for suede available that make them more weather resistant, you can get them at any cobbler. Suede is tricky, and is rarely done right. It's been debased by the likes of Banana Republic into a low quality, mass produced fabric that is a sign of cheapness and cutting corners. However, when done right, suede can be very cool.

Speaking of MiuMiu boots, there is a ton of them at Century21 at around $180-200. They look very rough and unappealing though...

I am not sure where to direct you for boots to be honest. My last few boot purchases were from Yoox and Barneys warehouse sale. Everything is so damn expensive. I guess Tootsi is worth checking out for Fiorentini+Baker stuff. Barneys CoOp (in the flagship only) seems to be a decent option for NDC. Esthete in the meatsmelling district has a very hard time getting rid of their NDC and Collection Privee?, so worth checking out come sale time. That's all I can think of in terms of "affordable." Destination used to be a great... well, destination, but they seem to be phasing out mens stuff (not sure if any left at this point).

Thanks Faust, I'll keep my eyes out for those. I'll wait until sales and see if anything pops up, seems like boots are popular this season so I should be able to find something. Only a month to go now...
