Re: La Zona

    saw Ice Storm for the first time in years and enjoyed it a lot more than i had remembered. almost makes me wish i was an investment banker that could afford a ridiculous house in new canaan. </P>

    i've enjoyed the Haneke movies i've seen (code unkown, cache) but i can't say i've necessarily been impressed while watching any of them. i'd certainly wait until Lynne Ramsay can get another film out before calling him the best filmmaker around right now.</P>

      Regarding Funny Games USA, I was a bit dissapointed at first but as I respect Haneke I tried to understand this move. He was into theatre, so I see this remake more like a representation of a theatre piece overseas, using local actors, same director, same script....a copycat...I ended loving this new idea of cinema, it isn't a "remake" for me. It's good for him, he has the funds now to start a new project, and his film hasn't been perverted. His identity rest pristine.</p>

      I liked the new version, the new actors give a new layer to the original idea.
      </p>
</p>

      I like the new version too, and you're reading of it in terms of theater makes me like it a little more. However, I still only "like" it, and, honestly, how could I not? It's a shot for shot remake of a great movie with great actors.</p>

      The point for me is more that it had far less impact this time around than it did the first time, and understandably so. It seemed to me as though Haneke could have taken the opportunity to reflect upon what had happened since his original film, especially in light of the whole Hostel spawned torture porn phenomena, which happened after the original.</p>

      Also, like you said before, Haneke is a great critic of cultures. His work in France and Germany is especially notable because of its unique, culturally specific confrontations. To simply remake the same film without changing anything suggests a thematic and cultural homogenization that seems, at worst, to contradict a lot what he's previously said about America and Hollywood, or, at best, lazy.</p>

      EDIT:</p>

      weird, I'd probably say the opposite. I wouldn't exactly call any of his movies "enjoyable," but they've all impressed the hell out of me.
Too bad the Salo re-release isn't going to be Blu-ray as well, considering the fact that BFI is releasing one. But, then again, it's Salo. Do we really need it in HD? [8-|]

          I have 2 versions of Salo, criterion laserdisc at the office and criterion dvd at home, I will be getting the new 2 disc version. BFI should also release arabian nights and canterbury tales on blu-ray.</P>

          i like salo, but to my sentimental heart is much closer his light,sexy,dirty trilogy-"decameron","cunterbery tales","arabian nights"--sex will never be this uncomplicated ever again...</P>

            I just grabbed Days of Heaven and Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters. I'd get more but I'm going on vacation Sunday and can't be spending all my money on DVDs!

              why so serious?

              i think i need to see it again. by the time the film came on i was braindead from the psycho heatwave, the half hour of commercials i had to sit through to get a decent seat, i didn't even notice it was on. fuck seeing this in imax, i could barely catch the visceral shit at half size. heath was awesome, of course, and nuanced as fuck, the reptile tongue, but the weight of the plot and too few poetic moments, there are some awesome ones, drag this puppy out...i loved bale's american psycho impression at the party, but batmans voice modulater has always annoyed me. can you even spoil a sheeny film like this, wont it last forever in the refrigerators of our minds like a dead corpse being revived forever all time?

                        Ok, just added and moved The Crow to the top of my Netflix queue. This is the great SZ poster film, I think. Train of thought that led me here - Sartorial Loft &gt; Pnidz&gt; Joy Division &gt; Dead Souls &gt; NIN cover of it &gt; The Crow soundtrack &gt; The Crow &gt; The costumes/story &gt; SZ.
