I ask why diversity is good and you tell me because the fashion word is white-centric. That seems like sidesteping the question. I still ask why diversity of race seems so important. I understand it is important and while I personally benefit from the drive towards diversity, I just always wonder why should I benefit because of some innate factor I cannot control.

Fashion as entertainment or fashion as commercial goods, are about peddling lies. It's about forcing a narrative on the population so they buy trends. The models are a big white lie towards that end
You make a distinction between private and public that I'm not sure I follow. How is a fashion show public? People need invitations to go to it, it is in a closed hall, and the public cannot see it.

Also designers do not force the narrative on the population to make them buy trends, that is the place of the stores. This can be seen by the photographers that make a profit off of the images of the collection releasing them, as opposed to the designers publishing images of their work. While this does become murky when designers or brands publish advertisements and sell their own clothes to the public I feel like these brands are not solely artists but also capitalists. While this does not necessitate lesser artistic output it seems hard to be both a good capitalist and a good artist, partially due to the need to alter/compromise your vision to suit the marketplace.

There's a lot of confusion in this thread regarding what does and does not constitute a political action.

Perhaps choosing only white models is a subconcious decision, but I believe it's a political decision nonetheless. A decision that is informed by some kind of synthesis of existing cultural influences.

I think I'm basically reiterating fuuma's post if I understand him correctly.

      this is an interesting discussion.

        GP:
Fashion shows are public. Has the veil of privilege and exclusivity in fashion (d)eluded you completely?--or the invention of the internet and Style.com?

For a forum centered on "alternate"/underground/"thinking-man's" fashion, I'm surprised with all the negative reaction to the concept that its nice to see alternate/"other" forms of beauty and culture represented on the runway. This can be done really well or horribly wrong and isn't limited to race.

Plus, to do this correctly one needs an eye for interesting details not normally celebrated. That albino black american guy with the off center bridge of the nose, the "ugly" guys in Rick Owens shows, the longhair Dominican guys for Plokhov and the bloodied black male in Siki Im. On the flipside, Lemaire's use of mostly white guys in his recent spring show was perfect for his clothes.

I dont think anyone here is calling for race quotas on the runway. Its not so different from an interest in underground fashion--its a desire to see another strong and compelling point of view.

In this day and age, diversity immediately means not excluding people for the way they look. Which brings me to your second question.

Facial structure. Facial structure makes a huge difference. Skin color doesn't matter on the body for obvious reasons, but on the face it is what makes the difference. Take Olivier Rousteing of Balmain, or a person of far eastern Asian descendants as examples. They're obviously going to want to see models they can somehow relate to.

Models for the most part also get paid little to nothing. Then you have to think about travel fees, and other expenses. That whole you can pick a handbag, shoes, a dress you like for modeling our clothing bullshit is NOT payment. So this makes the already very small percentage of models who aren't white even a smaller percentage.

So Chanel did a finale with the models holding signs about Women's rights, and other things. Idk about the rest of you, but I found it more laughable, and cringe worthy than I did applauding.

Wow that is absolutely retarded. Too bad women's rights isn't a struggle anymore.

Karl loves a good controversy. Anyone remember when he had pornstars at Fendi or Quranic Suras on a dress?

Having that diet coke he for she formal invitation to guys to hold up a sign on social media -feminism sign on a runway is a nice way to make the headlines. Should have staged a proper bra burning instead.

                              I didn't mean it like that :/ ...
It's because fashion has always had a stigma around it for being the complete opposite of what they actually tried to do at the finale, and with all the recent news about Emma Watson, and such speaking up about feminism, it's such a great time to also hop on the bandwagon for more media attention than the Chanel shows already get.
For such a real problem, they managed to make their concern for it look inauthentic.
THAT'S what made it laughable, and cringe worthy.

It's on Business of Fashion's facebook page.
